Squaaks – Rock Control
The formula for Squaaks is equal parts garage rock and Pixies-style postpunk, with zero pretension. Rock Control is a remarkable warm album, filled to the brim with melodies and head-popping pep. Though the album clocks in at just over half an hour, it is exactly the right length; like a cookie sneaked between meals it’s good clean fun and provides just enough of a sugar rush to keep you going. Brilliant in their simplicity, and clever in their choice of flourishes, Squaaks make unabashed pop that you won’t need to feel guilty for enjoying. If songs like “Be Dry My Bleeding Heart” or “Dark Like the Weather” don’t make you dance in your socks, I’m not sure what to do with you. Be sure to play the video for “Everything Twice” that is included for the album so you can see the band chase their villainous alter egos in a heated paper-airplane dogfight. Again, pure fun.
