Object – The Ethane Asylum
If you’re a fan of the classic industrial albums of the 1980s, there will come a day when you’ve completely maxed out your collection of old-school favorites. Luckily, projects like Object keep the flame burning. On The Ethane Asylum, Object works layers of synths and programming, the requisite samples, and FX-laced vocals into a potent mix that recalls the early work of dark electro artists such as Skinny Puppy while retaining a modern sensibility and fantastic production values. Each layer of sound remains crystal clear in the mix without a hint of mudiness. Object even manages a fair bit of variety; from the lighter EBM style of “End of Sin” to the instrumentals “Liquid Crystal View” and “Celestial Circuitry,” a wide range of old-school textures gets a full sonic exploration. It’s simply amazing that The Ethane Asylum reworks a style from an era now gone without ever sounding dated. If the last few Skinny Puppy albums have left you cold, you’ll love this—guilt-free and without a sense of nostalgia.
