Various Artists – Vague Machinery
I once had a conversation with someone who claimed that people really don’t take music that can be downloaded for free seriously. Because it’s free, he reasoned that the listener doesn’t place any value on the artistic integrity of the musicians. After all, if their music was worthwhile they’d be able to charge a fee for it, right?
Enter Vague Machinery, a free compilation of electronic music available for download here. The music on the compilation (and the musicians behind it) are difficult not to take seriously. From the menacing trip-hop of Displacer’s “Witching Hour” to the mind-warping rhythmic power noise of the Licked Clean Remix of Caustic’s “Mmm Papscraper,” there is something here for every fan of alt. electronic music. In the mood for IDM? Check out Lucid Static’s “Pandora’s Black Book” or Subduction’s “Temporality.” Industrial hip-hop? Dyad’s “Scheitelpunkt” is the track for you. Trance textures more your thing? Let Marching Dynamics‘ “A Slow Poisoner” be your first stop.
Far from devaluing the music, this compilation has insured that I check out the musicians featured here. Vague Machinery may be free, but it’s certainly far from worthless.
