The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill

Black Dossier is the third graphic novel in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Kevin O’Neill.  As with the preceding volumes, Black Dossier is an intensely literate adventure story, rife with literary allusions and clever plot twists.  Unlike the previous books, however, the book is not a romp through the annals of Victoriana; rather, the action follows Mina Murray and a rejuvenated Alan Quartermain as they seek to recover a mysterious collection of documents known as, of course, the Black Dossier in a post-Orwellian Britain.   Besides the smart writing and wonderful illustrations, what sets the book apart is its use of mixed media; Black Dossier is more than just a standard graphic novel, it combines a traditional comic book narrative with prose, advertisements, maps, an inserted Tijuana Bible, and even a denouement in 3-D (complete with 3-D glasses!).  Not only will the story please fans of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, this book should prove noteworthy for the way it pushes the boundaries of what a graphic novel can do while providing a strong, exciting narrative and an epic meditation on the importance of imaginative storytelling.

Plus, Alan Moore gets extra points for writing James Bond as a rapist thug.
