Feist – The Reminder

Because her reputation as an indie pop princess and critic’s darling preceded her, I was expected something completely different from Feist.  Where is the brash pretense that appeals to the hip kids with asymmetrical haircuts?  Is it somewhere underneath The Reminder’s slick, unobtrusive pop music?  I can’t find it.  But what I did find was an album’s worth of melodies, enthusiastic hand claps, intriguing and often cryptic lyricism, and enough instrumental variation to keep the ride pleasantly tuneful.  And honest-to-goodness love songs.  Remember those?  It’s nice to hear them again.  Many reviews have painted The Reminder as something revolutionary, but it’s not.  It’s a return to something largely neglected: smart pop that does exactly what it is supposed to.
