The Tiger Lillies – Urine Palace
Urine Palace finds London rotmongers The Tiger Lilliescollaborating with the Swedish Symphony Orchestra of Norrlandsoperan. The results don’t stray too far from what we’ve come to expect from The Tiger Lillies; Urine Palace is positively filthy with back alley Brechtian ditties about kicking babies, whores, and disease, but this time out the paeans to death and degradation are given a wider orchestral palette. Recorded live in front of an appreciative audience (sick monkeys!), Urine Palace showcases the morbid and debauched glee with which Martyn Jacques delivers his falsetto messages of pain and indignation and gives the musical backdrop of junk percussion, accordion, bass, ukulele, strings, and horns ample room to create an atmosphere that immerses the listener in the seedier side of life. This is nasty stuff, but as far as audio guignol goes The Tiger Lillies are without peer.
