MC Devvo + Shady Piez – From Yorkshire 2 New York
For those who haven’t yet been exposed to the phenomena on the telly, fat-pie.com, youtube, or Myspace, Devvo is a fictional character created as a satire on UK “chav culture.” And true to form, the CD portion of From Yorkshire 2 New York has earloads of chav stereotypes put to hip-hop: antisocial behavior, frequent mentions of cheap booze and drugs, nicking and fighting, and the valorization of not working a job get spit out in a foul-mouthed, thick lumpenproletariat accent while Shady Piez lays down the beats. The DVD contains footage of Devvo’s day-to-day life on the streets of Hull, one of England’s infamous crap towns. (Warning: do not watch the DVD in one sitting. Space it out, otherwise that way madness lies.) This is the kind of thing you don’t want to laugh at, but once you’re in the thick of it you really can’t help yourself. Are we laughing with Devvo or at him? Who cares? Best spark up a Benson, down a can of Thatcher’s White Magic, and get yous to the Job Centre while Devvo booms from your MP3eels playa. Rate good stuff, this is.
