Backworld – Good Infection

goodinfectionI’ve always been surprised that fans of apocalyptic folks acts largely ignore the work of NYC’s Backworld.  Neither as fey and unpredictable as Current93 or Legendary Pink Dots, nor as ominous as Death in June, Sol Invictus, or Fire + Ice, Backworld’s sombre-yet-spiritual songs reach toward a deeper sublimity.  Good Infection’s combination of strummed guitar, piano, accent strings, and clear vocals is less lush than Anthems from the Pleasure Park and less insistently haunting than Of Silver Sleep, but the album’s stark beauty pairs down the potential for excess into simple, lovely song-craft.  While they might not manage the prestige of their peers, Backworld has managed something better–an album of stirring emotions.
