Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End
The third film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series begins with admirable tension, but quickly dissolves into a mess of plot lines competing for resolution. Even with a running time of three hours there was no way that the multifold story arcs could be adequately completed, especially when new wrinkles and new plots are introduced rapid-fire throughout the film. Chow Yun Fat is wasted in an all too brief role; Johnny Depp seems bored; the star-crossed romance between Elizabeth Swann and William Turner has little on-screen sizzle; the Pirate Lords are introduced, only to have them merely spectate at the climactic battle; the Calypso plot goes nowhere; etc. Though the film features plenty of swashbuckling action scenes, the acrobatics and swordplay only serve to wake the viewer up instead of punctuating what should have been a rousing conclusion to the trilogy. At World’s End is tries to fire its cannon, but the powder is all wet.
