Skinny Puppy – Mythmaker

skinny_puppyThough many longtime fans can’t seem to come to grips with their new musical direction, Skinny Puppy continues to transcend the boundaries of industrial music.  Like it or loathe it, at least respect them for not writing songs with an eye on toward dance floor filler or for reiterating Too Dark Park ad infinitumMythmaker builds on the left-hand turn deployed by 2004’s The Greater Wrong of the Right, yet brings in a bit of the doom-laden bombast from the much-maligned The Process to create a more pounding, less aurally hypnotic, listening experience.  Skinny Puppy’s willingness to indulge in the eclectic is Mythmaker’s real strength; “Haze,” for example, begins with ambient organic ambient sounds and vocoder-dosed vocals, then bursts into a heavy symphonic bludgeon that resolves itself in delicate electronics before dissolving in a maelstrom of chugging guitars and Ogre’s desperate rantings.  Mythmaker probably isn’t an album for everyone, but then nothing that aspires ever is.
