Death by Doll – Gasoline

dbdgasoline2Fans of Dame Darcy’s previous musical endeavors may be in for a bit of a shock when they hear Gasoline – it doesn’t sound like it was recorded on a cheap tape player after a drunken tea party binge!  Enter Death by Doll: Dame Darcy and friends making icy electro-pop-rock with echoing vocals and the occasional smidgen of unusual instrumentation.  (Hello banjo!)  The overall vibe falls somewhere between Autonervous and Strawberry Switchblade, yet with a homegrown DIY aesthetic running all the way through.  Songs vary from the terse “Gasoline” and the dreamlike “Dot Dot Dot” to the epic oddities of “Towing Jehovah” and the noisome-yet-”Fade to Grey”-ish ”October 31st.”  Very unusual, very interesting.  I should also add that this album is not to be confused with the reggaeton hit “Gasolina.”
