Wassup Rockers
Follow the mishaps and adventures of a group of teenage Hispanic skate punks from South Central Los Angeles. They tangle with racist cops, gun-wielding eccentrics, cute upper-class girls and their protective boyfriends, lusty rich housewives, and hipster party-goers. A description of the movie’s events may sound more dramatic and exciting than actually depicted. Most of the time these guys are found skating, hanging out, and BS-ing each other. The young cast is noticeably amateur, but thoroughly likable and most natural when just goofing around. There’s not much of a developed story, and the climactic moments are overblown and quickly dismissed. Don’t go into it expecting the heavy themes of Kids or Thirteen. The subjects of Wassup Rockers are quite innocent despite their casual attitudes on drinking, sexuality, and suicide. It works best as a vicarious reminder of the fun and freedom of a youthful lack of responsibilities.
