Attrition – Something Stirs

attritionstirsSomething Stirs might surprise Attrition fans who are used to the group’s modern esoteric-electro style.  Something Stirs is a collection of the band’s earliest, formative work; there is still a good amount of arcane atmosphere deployed here, but the overall sound of these recordings owes more to post-punk, pseudo-industrial sonic experimentation than the group’s latest material.  It’s especially interesting to hear what Attrition sounded like as a primarily female-fronted entity, before Martin Bowes’s vocals whispered their way to the forefront.  While this may not be the Attrition you know and love, the music stands on its own merits.  Musical dilettantes currently riding the new wave of post-punk Sturm und Drang will find much to appreciate on Something Stirs.  And really, this album is worth hearing just to savor how well this material has been cleaned up from the original four-track tapes and made the transition to the digital age.
