God Told Me To
A religious detective investigates a rash of seemingly random shootings, all casually carried out by normal citizens. What they have in common is their dying statement: “God told me to.” He tries to uncover what drove these unprovoked people to kill, and his discoveries put his faith in jeopardy. Sounds a lot more intriguing than it’s carried out. Released the same year as The Omen and three years after The Exorcist, I expected that God Told Me To would have ridden the 1970s religious horror trend in exploring man facing his demons incarnate. The story does take a weird turn, but it’s more like an episode of The X-Files than anything seriously philosophical. For a low-budget film it’s produced and acted well, but it’s not going to inspire much theological debate.
