Hard Candy
When a fourteen year old girl ends up at the apartment of a much older photographer she met on the Internet, you know things are about to take a dark turn. But perhaps not in the way you expect. Think Lolita-meets-Audition. As a piece of visual art, Hard Candy makes good use of close optical scrutiny of the principle actors; the color scheme–rich in reds, greens, and areas of deep darkness–reminds me quite a bit of the photography of Floria Sigismondi. I wish I could say more about the plot, but this is the kind of film you want to go into knowing as little as possible. I will say this: Hard Candy is a tense film.
