The Black Dahlia
It’s a shame when real-life people or events are the inspiration for mediocre movies, thereby wasting any potential a better effort could have worked wonders with. This fictional account of a famous Hollywood murder mystery is bad at best. The shambling story tries to copy L.A. Confidential’s seedy mood and tension, but takes a number of laughable turns. The cool 1940s noir atmosphere is sullied by scenery-guzzling bit characters with poor dialogue. It seems like the smaller the part, the more cliched a character is. Worst of all, shots of the mutilated central figure are gawking and gruesome. In these scenes the film resorts to exploitation to try and hook its audience, but comes off as revulsively amateurish.
