Aberdeen City – The Freezing Atlantic
Aberdeen City stake out a sonic claim somewhere between The Killers and Interpol, perhaps with a tinge of The Strokes thrown in for good measure. (Though to my ear they pitch their tent nearer to The Killers than anywhere else.) On The Freezing Atlantic, these boys bang out guitar squalls that rival any of their fellow alt rock peers and also manage some swirling, depths-of-the-soul slower numbers with as even a hand. For example, the likely single “God Is Going to Get Sick of Me” has just the right combination of driving guitar, indie hooks, and memorable lyrics to be a hit, but the textured post-punk balladry and wistful vocal tones of “In Combat” compare favorably. There isn’t really a low spot or ill-advised move on the album. Solid stuff from a new band to watch; get hip now, you can tell all your friends you were into them before they hit the big time.
