Cinema Strange – Quatorze Exemples Authentiques Du Triomphe De La Musique Decorative
Perhaps Cinema Strange are gearing up to compete with Fiona Apple for the World’s Longest Record Title? Quatorze Exemples Authentiques Du Triomphe De La Musique Decorative doesn’t diverge much from the established Cinema Strange sound: prickly guitar lines drenched in chorus dance in minuet, bass lines lurch like a punch drunk lout, the drums ignore the surrounding chaos, and Lucas Lanthier’s warbly voice rises above like a fragile bird…and somehow it all manages to land on the enjoyable side of theatrical, Batcave-esque gothic rock. If anything, the new album is Cinema Strange’s most driving work; of course, there are a few musical interludes that allow the album to breath, but overall this record is tightly focused and propelled ever forward.
A word on the packaging: this is one of the nicer digipacks I’ve come across lately. It has not one, but three booklets…one for album credits, one for lyrics, and one containing two accompanying short stories. Also housed within the package is a second disc which features the short stories as read by Lanthier. You can read along or listen to the music, your choice!
