Katzenjammer Kabarett – self-titled

katzkabaretKatzenjammer Kabarett have a maniac take on cabaret: synth piano and organ combine with deathrock-esque guitar, lashed to a raw, nearly tribal take on the traditional cabaret beat.  Mary Komplikated’s vocals have that smoldering torch quality, yet she isn’t afraid to indulge in the grotesque as well as play the role of chanteuse.  The band are at their best when they keep their cabaret influence in sight; songs like “Gemini Girly Song” and “The Crowd Around” are likely to give demimondes their fix of dance hall decadence.  Nevertheless, Katzenjammer Kabarett can also turn out a ripping rock song when the opportunity presents itself, as evidenced by “Eve at the Mansion” and “Katzenjammer Kids.”  If the populace of the Weimar Republic had dressed in torn fishnets and had an addiction to theatrical Gothicism, Katzenjammer Kabarett just might have been penning the national anthem.

However, again with the extra long closing track that ends the album with needless noise!
