Limbo

limboMorally-straight lawyer Adam Moses (how’s that for subtle?) goes head-to-head with the city’s Mafioso and ends up shot on a rooftop. Somehow he lives, but notices strange things happening around him. People and events keep repeating, and Adam quickly realizes he’s caught in a one-hour loop. In his search for the shooter and clues that might help him escape eternity, he discovers two other similarly affected people. One is an existential drug addict, apparently going insane from his time in limbo. The other is a mysterious woman that may have some answers. As Adam spends countless hours consulting everyone from a priest to a prostitute, his dark past begins to surface. It’s like a noir Groundhog Day, where the temporally trapped man crumbles instead of becoming a master pianist. When there are no consequences to one’s actions, what prevents a person from committing their own atrocious acts?

Limbo is impressive as an independent feature, but it’s not without its flaws. The black and white effect helps set the tone and smooth out the differences in the digital video shots. As with other indie productions, the actors don’t always convince me and suspend my disbelief. There is a non-graphic but overtly sexual scene that made me uncomfortable as the amateur actors played it out a bit awkwardly. Nit-picks aside, it’s an interesting story that doesn’t suffer from a watered-down Hollywood ending.
