Cello

celloNo, Cello isn’t Wisteriax: The Movie…it’s a horror movie from Korea about a cello instructor facing a multitude of problems in life: she’s still dealing with a traumatic car accident from her past, a former student who is displeased with her grade may be seeking revenge, and her husband has just hired the most morbid housekeeper on the planet.  Oh, and she’s either hallucinating or reality is warping around her.  Oh, and there’s a malevolent ghost with the requisite long hair.  If that sounds like a lot going on in a 90 minute movie, it is. Director Woo-cheol Lee manages to wrap-up all of these elements into a satisfying (and downbeat) conclusion; however, the problem with Cello is that it doesn’t transcend the expectations put on Asian horror films.  In the end, it suffers from playing by the book instead of throwing the book out the window and going for something truly uncanny: a fresh take on the genre.  Still, this film has its moments and its atmosphere benefits from an unusually strong use of music.
