Nicki Jaine – Live
Nicki Jaine’s Live does a good job of showcasing Jaine’s Wiemar-influenced cabaret style; in particular, Jaine’s voice appears to be just as powerful in a live setting as it is on studio recordings. Unfortunately, this album is marred by occasionally uneven recording quality. While songs like “Sound of Girls” and “Amsterdam” sound fantastic, Jaine’s cover of Kurt Weill’s “Alabama Song” isn’t really up to par–the sound of people talking in the audience is distracting and the crash of dishes is just plain aggravating. Still, for such a modest price fans of Nicki Jaine might well want to pick this up anyway; casual listeners would be better served by seeking out Of Pigeons and Other Curiosities.
