Besnyo – Look Alive
When a friend alerted me to the fact that an unknown band had been added as an opening act at the She Wants Revenge gig we were planning on going to, I did what I normally do when in this situation: I checked them out online to see what I was in for. Luckily, Besnyo has put their entire album on their website for easy streaming access. Here’s what I got: beautiful, melancholy guitar drones that are both mesmeric and driving, a tight rhythm section, and minimalist, nearly-whispered vocals. Their songs are tightly-wound coils of melodic shadow, not unlike walking down a rain-soaked street well after midnight. Besnyo straddles the line between the precise staccato sensibilities of Joy Division and Interpol and swirling shoegaze of The Cure or Scarling. Look Alive is probably the best modern album that you haven’t heard yet. And really, catch them live if you can, they’re fantastic.
