Citizen Dog
So you thought Amélie was whimsical, bright and surreal? Wait until you see Citizen Dog. Its color palette is straight out of 1950s Better Homes and Garden, and fantastic things happen so frequently that they don’t faze the stoic characters. Lizards give people grandmotherly advice. Fingers detach and reattach without injury. Motorcycle helmets rain from the sky. Teddy bears talk and smoke cigarettes. At the center of this craziness is Pod, a Thai country boy finding work in Bangkok. He’s infatuated with Jin, an obsessive-compulsive maid. They’re almost too kooky to share a single film, and it takes some time for them to find the right connection. Along the way they struggle with the existential problem of holding onto one’s dream while the world tries to strip it away. In a world as zany as theirs it’s a fun adventure.
