Chiasm – Relapse
On Relapse, Chiasm returns with a bounty of interesting dark electro. Relapse seems much more minimal that the previous Disorder. Washes of synths give way to skillfully played piano, rhythm loops, and Emileigh Rohn’s disaffected-yet-somehow-emotive vocals. Since this record was written, performed, and recorded entirely by Rohn, it feels like an intensely personal expression; like any good auteur, Rohn’s work here seems unified in both theme and style. An overriding sense of disillusionment permeates throughout, yet songs like “Rewind” and “Chosen Fate” might just pack an industrial dance floor. The disc ends with two remixes, and surprise!, it’s nice to see an artist offer remixes of their work that actually manage to take the material in different directions.
