Dalek – Absence
Of all the groups mining similar territory, regardless of musical genre, Dalek paints the most accurate and engaging picture of urban dystopia. The sonic backdrop on Absence is composed of manipulated swirls of dissonance and distortion married to simple, yet effective beats. What would become a formula in less-adept hands becomes a statement: this is the sound of the city, from the factory slums to the grinding madness inside its people. Politically-charged and socially-conscious rhymes tie the audio collage together, the lone voice of sanity within the crush of modernity. This isn’t an album to party down to; this is an album to make you wonder where everything went wrong. Experimental, unique, and above all, true.
