Revolting Cocks – Cocked & Loaded

revcoloadedWe’ve waited thirteen years since the release of Linger Fickin’ Good for this? While there are some interesting moments on Cocked & Loaded—the Isaac Hayes-meets-bursts-of-metal-screed of “Ten Million Ways to Die” and the seedy “Pole Grinder” are interesting tracks—most of the album is given over to boneheaded aggro-by-numbers and lyrics that are juvenile even by RevCo standards. Even tracks that show some promise get let down somewhere along the way; for example, the amped-up surf riffs of “Fire Truck” are paired with some truly inane lyrics. Ultimately, the problem is that Cocked & Loaded doesn’t really feel like a Revolting Cocks album. Something is missing, and that something is the punchy bass of Paul Barker, not to mention the contributions of Chris Connelly, Luc Van Acker, and Bill Rieflin. (Oddly enough, there seem to be more members of Cheap Trick playing on this album than the RevCo we know and love.) Overall, this album feels like a handful of outtakes from Ministry and Lard records that just didn’t make the cut. And I still don’t know how to feel about the cover of Bauhaus’s “Dark Entries.”
