Combichrist’s Everybody Hates You has the distinguished (dis)pleasure of being the most over-played album at goth-industrial clubs at the moment. Nevertheless, there is a good reason for the ubiquitousness of tracks like “Enjoy the Abuse” and “This is My Rifle” on DJs setlists: Everybody Hates You is catchy as hell. Combichrist successfully fuses techno, EBM, and electro-industrial into one big stomping mess. But perhaps even more important to the Combichrist formula is the uber-aggressive attitude that exudes from this project. All of the material on Everybody Hates You is doused liberally in over-the-top nihilism via lyrical praises for serial murderers, samples from war movies, and other jagged bits of negativity. However, all these malevolent tropes are presented in such a sneering, in-your-face style that you can’t possibly take them seriously, which somehow manages to turn the whole demented thing in a fun romp on the dance floor.
