Bride and Prejudice
I like Bollywood and I love seeing how other cultures re-imagine Western stories. Unfortunately, to paraphrase William Shatner and Henry Rollins, I just can’t get behind Bride and Prejudice. Ostensibly a version of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with a Indian twist, this film misses the mark by not utilizing the best bits of its source material. For example, the Darcy character is completely devoid of brooding charm. Similarly, Lalita (Bride’s Elizabeth) shows not one drop of wit and the Wickham plot is completely mismanaged. Some of these flaws might be overlooked if the song and dance bits were any fun, but they’re not; instead, the lyrics are facile and poorly synced to the actors’ mouthes. Even the costuming was a let-down.
