6ixtynin9

6ixtynin9Times are tough for Tum, a young Thai woman just laid off from her secretarial job. She thinks her luck has changed for the better when she discovers a noodle box stuffed with cash outside her door, but soon everyone from gang members to the police to nosy neighbors come knocking. Things get complicated before Tum can even decide what to do with the loot, and she’s running out of room to hide the dead bodies that begin filling her tiny apartment. Hardly a sexual innuendo, the title refers to Tum’s door number: a nine that keeps slipping upside-down and causing repeated mistaken identities. That’s not to say there isn’t a good dose of blue humor, which makes the film reminiscent of a very bloody Three’s Company episode. The comedy helps take the sting out of all the foul play and accidental deaths, but doesn’t reduce the final message. Quoting Truman Capote, “When God hands you a gift, he also hands you a whip; and the whip is intended for self-flagellation solely.”
