Listening to I Am a Bird Now is like slowly draining a glass of melancholy wine. Antony’s trembling voice floats, flutters, and soars above bittersweet torch songs. Musically, this album features some inspired piano playing and subtle, sparse touches of guitar, drums, and strings; the archly soulful song “Fistful of Love” showcases some of the best horns to be found this side of Motown. Also of note are guest appearance by Boy George and Lou Reed, among others luminaries who join the Johnsons in their quest to articulate the heartfelt yearning of a confused soul in love with the world. This is a fine collection of songs of remorse and unrequited love that you won’t regret after a thousand spins.
