Birth
Very serious and very creepy. Those are the two overwhelming moods of Birth, the story of a rich widower visited by a ten-year-old boy claiming to be her reincarnated husband. Like in They Came Back, a bizarre situation is followed through realistically, and the depths of human emotion are often painful. This wants to be a Kubrick film so badly, with all the dreary open spaces, uncomfortably long pensive shots, and economic direction. The ambiguity of the central mystery may strike many viewers as a major flaw, but as a “what if” scenario it’s a fascinating and disturbing movie.
