The Call Of Cthulhu

callofcthulhudvdH.P. Lovecraft’s classic tale of madness and horror is lovingly filmed by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, a group of die-hard fans and role-playing gamers. I’ve long been impressed with the creative game plots and exquisite props featured on their website, and the DVD lives up to my expectations. They manage to visualize a very faithful version of the story, and also recreate the look of a 1920s silent film. The vintage-style production really seems as if it could have come from the era of Lovecraft, and enhances the aura of creepy mystery. Although it’s a very low budget indie project, the acting, design and direction are impressive. The German Expressionist-inspired sets and brief stop motion animation are haunting. Most notable is the exciting orchestral score (presented in both hi-fi and an alternate “Mythophone” track). The Call of Cthulhu is an all-around nice and atmospheric presentation that glows with the love of the material that went into it.
