This is the movie that episodes 1-3 should have been. Gritty special effects instead of super-glossy, compelling characters, and a Barney Miller alum. Whether or not one has seen the show that came before this movie (I think this has nothing officially to do with the TV show due to copyrights and all that) this is an enjoyable sci-fi film. The concluding battle was what took this movie over the top for me, the actors made us care about them and whether they lived or died and the fate of each character was truly up in the air, unlike most stories told today where early on the list of survivors can be made.
