The Protagonist – Interim
While some might say that that The Protagonist is the softer side of Magnus Sundstrom, Interim isn’t an album that you’re likely to hear on your local AM radio station. The Protagonist excells at neo-classical concoctions of synths and strings that recall a Dark Age that never was. While some neo-classical offerings wander off into the ethereal twilight, Interim manages to craft an atmosphere that is at once mystical and gritty; certainly, the use of militaristic drumming gives the music a rare sense of urgency without veering into pure bombast. Fans of Arcana and Dead Can Dance should devour this with greed.
