Hack/Slash vs. Evil Ernie
Ah, the inevitable comic book crossover. This one finds Cassie Hack, a hunter of serial killers, facing off against Evil Ernie, an undead mass murderer. Sounds good in theory, but in practice it reads more like an excuse to re-introduce Evil Ernie in light of the launch of a new series of Ernie comics. The storyline is very contrived and is full of missed opportunities. (For example, it would be fun to have the two titular characters’ sidekicks interact. If you’ve got two sidekicks hanging around, why not have them duke it out?) Also, the art in this book is amazingly poor; while I tend to like painted comic book pages, these painted panels are terrible. Evil Ernie looks more like one of the little beasties from the movie Ghoulies than an Iron Maiden-inspired zombie…and don’t even get me started on the many contortions and distortions of Cassie Hack’s face.
