Dark Water (2005)
This is something I never thought I’d see on the big screen: an American remake of a Japanese horror film that is actually better than the original. Dark Water is about a troubled woman named Dahlia who moves into a cheap apartment on Roosevelt Island with her young daughter. Dahlia is going through a protracted divorce from her husband and has severe family issues lurking in her past. Of course, her family issues are nothing compared to those possessed by the malevolent force behind the spreading water stain seeping through the apartment’s ceiling. As Dahlia and her daughter get drawn into the mystery of what happened in the apartment above them, things go from weird to unsettling. This film may fail to find it’s audience; it’s slow and suspenseful, with nary a gross-out effect in sight. Still, it is better than the Japanese version due to not giving the plot away in the first ten minutes and a strong performance from Jennifer Connelly.
