Dead Can Dance – Paris, France 14th March 2005
One of my absolute favorite bands has reunited for a world-wide tour. Pricey tickets are being snatched up in a snap for their sold-out shows. Luckily, a small company called The Show has partnered with the group to record their concerts. (The Show recently did a similar well-received project with The Pixies.) Each performance is carefully mixed and mastered back in the studio, and released in elegantly designed 2-disc packages. Too bad for a lot of fans, the limited-edition CDs of the European dates sold out as quickly as tickets did. But I got my order in, suckers! It’s a veritable greatest hits of the band’s exotic sound and career, and the songs sound better here than they did on the original albums. In a time when most acts rely on pieced-together tracks and production trickery to achieve a cohesive sound, Dead Can Dance are an amazing live ensemble and masters of an assortment of instruments. Celtic and operatic vocals, thunderous tribal drumming, magical strings and reeds combine in a sound that lures classical mavens and goths alike.
