The Birthday Massacre – Violet
I’ve been in a good mood since the 80s came back. The music I loved growing up was always dismissed by my peers. Specifically, anything remotely New Wavey…drum machines and synthesizers were the kiss of death if you wanted to be cool at my school. God bless the Electroclash revolution! I can’t get enough of 21st century bands like The Faint, The Epoxies and Freezepop, partying like it’s 1989. Those bands do a good job recreating the future as seen through the eyes of 80s Night fixtures Public Image Limited, Missing Persons and Suzy Andrews. The best new New Wave not only pulls it off with a straight face (with or without tongue-in-cheek), but also with a few updated ingredients. In this respect, The Birthday Massacre has the recipe to be Gothic dancefloor darlings. Bubbly sequenced synths and lovely female vocals borrowed from Book of Love. Angelic pads and dramatic electro arrangements straight from Real Life. Add a healthy dose of NĂ¼ Metal guitars and morbidly playful lyrics, and the Hot Topic crowd will follow them like the Pied Piper. It’s formulated, posturing and throw-away, but I love it. I bet the jerks who felt superior with their “real music” in high school all like it too.
