It is almost universally acknowledged that endless sequels deliver diminishing returns. Case in point: Hellraiser. The first film was a startling and unique arthouse terror. The second film was slightly less so. By the third film Pinhead and his fellow Cenobites had turned into familiar wisecracking villains that had precious little of their initial charm left. And so here we are, seven films down the pike, and what do we have? No a whole lot, actually. Kari Wuhrer (former MTV VJ who seems to have sold her soul to the folks churning out follow ups to Hellraiser and the Prophecy) is a reporter on a the trail of a bizarre cult of mysteriously returned-from-the-dead people. Not a terrible premise, but one not well supported by incomprehensible shifts in location and plot. How does Pinhead and the Lament Configuration figure into this strange mess of a movie? Deus ex machina and that’s about it. At least this film is mercifully short.
