11:14
11:14 opens and ends with the same pivotal scene. The rest of the film is spent jumping back to separate but interconnected events that build to a disastrous chain-reaction. The overlapping storylines, comically-shocking scenarios and quirky characters are echoes of Go and Pulp Fiction. The reverse-chronological structure aims to be as clever as Memento, gradually revealing reasons for weird plot elements. While it works in keeping the story engaging even though we know where things are leading, it just seems too familiar as a gimmick. This black comedy has some pretty gruesome scenes, sometimes going too far over the top to be believable. That, and the downright silly soundtrack make 11:14 seem rather unbalanced. It’s an entertaining movie, but parts of it are too deliberately extreme for its own good.
