Tales of Mystery and Madness by Edgar Allan Poe, illustrated by Gris Grimly
Tales of Mystery and Madness contains four well-loved stories by Edgar Allan Poe, “The Black Cat”, “The Masque of the Red Death”, “Hop-Frog”, and “The Fall of the House of Usher”, all illustrated in glorious color by Gris Grimly. Although I’ve read each of these tales numerous times over the years, these illustrated versions seem fresh due the wonderful art that accompanies them. Though done in a cartoonish style, the illustrations perfectly convey the delightfully perverse nature of Poe’s writings; it is obvious that Gris Grimly is a true proponent of Poe’s work. This book would make for a brilliant present for either a mature child or a macabre adult as anyone with a morbid bent will treasure this tome. My only complaint is that I wish this book was longer, pairing more of Poe’s classic stories with Gris Grimly illustrative madness.
