The Men Who Stare at Goats by Jon Ronson

menwhostaregoatsAn investigative look inside the U.S. military’s attempted explorations into the supernatural, paranormal, and just plain hippy-dippy. Journalist Jon Ronson interviews a variety of figures with questionable reputations (Uri Geller doesn’t make the most reliable source, IMHO) to track the evolution of zany practices funded by American taxpayers. Psychic spying, invisibility, subliminal hypnosis, matter transference, and other X-Files subject matter have apparently been seriously pursued in the interest of national defense. Much of the book has a comical tone, albeit a rather unsettling one. It’s easy to laugh at the crazy things the government and military supposedly do, until the realization sinks in that many of the wild ideas have inspired methods of torture. Even if none of it’s true, the book works as dark humor and fodder for conspiracy buffs.
