Robots

robotsThe development of CGI animation continues to impress me. The world and characters of Robots are beautiful, and I wish today’s car companies would take a lesson from the film’s designers. Everything is artfully-crafted chrome and sleek, spiraling curves. It’s an intricately-crafted setting, sure to reveal lots of new details on repeated viewings. However, like in Ice Age, Twentieth Century Fox can’t get over the cliches of animated kiddie stories: “follow your dreams” affirmations, cloying musical numbers, fart jokes, etc. And if you’re not a big Robin Williams fan, his motor-mouth presence here will tire you quickly. The clever bits are really well done though: riffs on mechanical parenthood, homages to The Wizard of Oz and 2001, and best of all, breakdancing robots!
