Battlestar Galactica: 2003 Mini-Series
I never watched much of the original series in the 1970s, so I can’t compare the classic to this Sci-Fi Channel remake. They sure brought out the firepower for the new version, including a strong cast (Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell), cool FX, and most importantly, a solid script. Galactica is really unlike any sci-fi effort I’ve seen before, and the risks made in trying something different pay off well. We’re witness to the near-extinction of the human race at the hands of its own rebellious robotic creations. Instead of simply being a big space shoot-em-up, the story focuses on what might really happen in such a disaster. Families are torn apart. Governments and ecologies crumble. Hopes are at turns raised and dashed. Each character has a very human reaction to the catastrophic events surrounding them. Adding to the realism is the Cops-like camera work used during the space battles. A meaty mini-series that’s much more thrilling and touching than I expected.
