Collateral
Hit-man Vincent (Tom Cruise) hires cabbie Max (Jamie Foxx) to drive him from job to job one night in Los Angeles. When the assassin takes his driver hostage in order to complete his rounds, we’re witness to a thriller as much about violence as about battles of the conscience. Straight-and-narrow Max is aghast at Vincent’s carefree and pushy behavior, but eventually learns enough of the killer’s tricks to save himself. Cruise and Foxx play parts with complex layers, expressing as much with glances and nuances as with words. Director Michael Mann shoots L.A. beautifully; his use of the city’s neon and office windows as the primary light source reminded me of scenes from Blade Runner. Exciting and satisfying, ending with some great dialogue that punctuates the escapade’s moral stand-off.
