Monster
Why was the Marlboro cigarette font used for the title? Charlize Theron, who was snubbed for the Saturn Award for her role in Mighty Joe Young, took home an Oscar for her role as real-life serial killer Aileen Carol Wuornos. There were times when it was easy to forget how very pretty she is, when she owned the role, other times she seemed to doing a bad DeNiro Taxi Driver impression, and worse yet, her unnatural movements while smoking totally distracted. In a supporting role, one-time It girl Christina Ricci doesn’t do much to help keep her title, although as the film progresses, her role as written takes on several layers of complexity. Aileen’s story doesn’t ask for sympathy, but is oddly sympatheitic. I can’t imagine how Roberto Benigni wrote/ directed/ starred in the original.
