The Residents: The Commercial DVD
The Residents were making radical music videos long before MTV was even thought of. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Commercial Album, this DVD features mostly new mini-movies to accompany the 40 one-minute tracks from the original record. There are 56 short videos to be precise, by eclectic artists from around the world, working with traditional animation, CGI, collage, puppets, live-action, and so on. I’ve always liked The Residents much more for their surreal public image (most famously, four gentlemen in tuxedos with eyeballs for heads) than for their avant garde music. This collection is perfect for fair-weather fans like myself, who can only take their tunes in small doses but appreciate their surprising visuals. Like other Res releases, The Commercial DVD has a fun and unusual interface (this time a maze) and assorted hidden goodies.
