The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi
“Beat” Takeshi stars and directs this retelling of the story of The Blind Swordsman, an iconic Japanese character. The swordsman is a traveling masseur, but ultimately, he is a cousin of the Man With No Name. Well choreographed, interesting blood special effects (computer generated, which made the blood flow slowly and brought a very different feel than the buckets of blood approach utilized by films such as Versus) and a compelling enough story made me finally appreciate the well-reported coolness of “Beat” (his other films I have seen left me feeling uninspired). His blonde hair worked, the sole gun in the film was out-of-place, and all the singing and dancing (not the Geisha’s) added a surreal edge to the film.
