This unlikely Christmas special was quickly put together around the time of the big writers’ strike of 1988, but stands as strong as most of the episodes of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. It’s packed to the gills with guest stars like Grace Jones, k.d. lang, Cher, Charo, Joan Rivers, Little Richard, Zsa Zsa Gabor and many more. So many, that Whoopi Goldberg appears only to be told she can’t be booked for two more years. All the Playhouse regulars are here for the party too. It’s campy, wacky, smart and funny. The DVD includes two commentary tracks, of which the puppeteers’ is by far the more entertaining. (For being so animated as Pee-Wee Herman and other characters, Paul Reubens never comes across as very interesting in his commentaries.)
